Do health screening regularly to save lives is not just a catchy message—it’s a crucial public health directive, especially considering the high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Malaysia. Taking proactive steps to assess your NCD risks regularly is the key to early detection, effective treatment, and necessary lifestyle changes.

Understanding Your Risk in Malaysia
The statistics on NCD risks in Malaysia are a stark call to action:

Many people are unaware that they are at high risk or already have these chronic conditions, which include diabetes, heart diseases, and cancer. Delaying screening can prevent timely diagnosis, leading to complications. By changing your mindset and dedicating time to regular screening, you can implement preventive measures and save lives.

Key Health Metrics to Monitor
For non-diabetic and non-hypertensive adults, aim for the following healthy ranges:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI): 18.5–24.9 kg/m²

  • Waist Circumference:

    • Male: <90 cm (<35 inches)

    • Female: <80 cm (<31 inches)

  • Blood Pressure:

    • Systolic (Upper): <120 mmHg

    • Diastolic (Lower): <80 mmHg

  • Total Cholesterol: <5.2 mmol/L

  • Fasting Blood Glucose: <5.6 mmol/L

Action Plans for Regular Screening
Regular health screening is not just for the sick—it’s for everyone.

For Adults

  • General Screening: All adults above 30 years old should attend health screenings annually.
  • High-Risk Individuals: Individuals with a family history of NCDs should start screening earlier and monitor their health status more closely.

For Children

  • Parents must measure the weight and height of their children and monitor their BMI (Body Mass Index) every six months.
  • The overall health status is determined by tracking their growth against the BMI-for-age growth charts.

By making regular screening and knowing your numbers a fundamental part of your lifestyle, you are giving yourself the best chance for a healthy and long life.
